Abstract: Working with text in education is one of the primary competencies of students requiring not only the knowledge of types of texts, but also their reception and production. The submitted article points to the level of Slovak students in terms of their linguistic and textual competences and the demands that are required of them in this field. Specifically, there are problems concerning the intercultural background of academic texts and the process of scientific research.

MILENA HELMOVÁ – KOMMUNIKATION ZWISCHEN KULTUREN AUS DER PERSPEKTIVE VON INTERNATIONALEN GESCHÄFTSVERHANDLUNGEN (COMMUNICATION AMONG CULTURES FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS NEGOTIATIONS)

Abstract: The paper focuses on intercultural dialogue from the point view of business negotiations in international context. We try to find adequate answer/what is the role of intercultural communication in business negotiations and the way it affects their final goals. Business partners are supposed to have adequate professional, social as well as linguistic competences, and more attention has been paid to intercultural communication and competence. The good intention itself to enter the intercultural dialogue does not at all mean the dialogue would be successful. Only in the case when business partners prove their abilities and readiness to start the dialogue / the potential output might be mutually convenient.

EVA MAIEROVÁ – IDIÓMY V MARKETINGOVEJ KOMUNIKÁCII (IDIOMS IN MARKETING COMMUNICATION)

Abstrakt: The presented article is part of the KEGA research project Idiomatic Expressions in Business Communication (015EU-4/2017), carried out at the Faculty of Applied Languages of the University of Economics in Bratislava as the research centre. The text deals with idiomatic expressions used in marketing communication in English with a special focus on the language of advertising. Idioms are used in this discourse due to their attractivity and memorability. At the same time, idioms can present a certain problem for non-native English speakers and that is the reason attention is also paid to the ways how learners of English can master them.

NINA MOCKOVÁ – CHROMATIZMY ČERVENEJ FARBY V  SLOVENČINE A ŠPANIELČINE (IDIOMS WITH RED COLOUR IN SLOVAK AND SPANISH

Abstract: This article is aimed on idioms with a chromatic element in their structure, specifically, the red colour. It compares and contrasts Slovak idioms with red colour with the Spanish ones regarding the aspect of their formal structure, semantic connotations and the aspect of translating them from, focusing on those with equivalents and those without equivalents. The aim of this article is to find out the common features and differences between the chromatic idioms of red colour in Slovak and Spanish according to the defined criteria.

OLGA RYAKHOVSKAYA  ДИАЛЕКТНАЯ ЛЕКСЕМА БОЖАТКА НА СЛАВЯНСКОМ КУЛЬТУРНОМ ФОНЕ (НА ЛЕКСИКОГРАФИЧЕСКОМ МАТЕРИАЛЕ) (RUSSIAN DIALECTAL WORD “BOZHATKA” IN THE SLAVIC CULTURAL SITUATION)

Abstract: The article is devoted to the study of one of the names of terms of kinship. This term is not a blood relationship, but a spiritual relationship. We are talking about the name of the godmother in a wedding ceremony in the Russian North. The name of the godfather is also analyzed. It is explored semantics, origin and use of this word in the territory of the Russian North. Also its analogues are studied in other Slavic languages. The article shows the linguistics and cultural significance of this lexical unit for the Russian northern tradition and linguistic consciousness, in which the ancient archetypal ideas of the structure of the family and the world are preserved.

JARMILA RUSIŇÁKOVÁ – ANGLICKÉ IDIÓMY - TEÓRIA A PRAX (ENGLISH IDIOMS – THEORY AND PRACTICE)

Abstract: This paper is part of the KEGA project entitled Idioms in Business Communication, which is subsidised by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic. The main aim of the project is to examine current phraseology in the realms of economics, diplomacy and law and to develop the studentsˋ reading literacy as well as their speaking skills with the focus on idioms used in the professional settings. The author of the paper presents the results of teaching and studying efforts in this field and describes certain peculiarities in studentsˋ interpretation of the idioms.

Abstract: The article examines the features of the discourse representation of migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers on the eve of the 2016 EU referendum in the context of critical discourse analysis on the material of the leading British editions the Daily Mail and the Guardian, identifies the main discourse topics using categories forming a discursive view of migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers in news reports of British conservative and liberal press.

MARTINA ULIČNÁ  SLOVENSKO-RUSKÉ PARALELY A ODLIŠNOSTI VO VYJADROVANÍ PRIESTOROVÝCH VZŤAHOV II (SLOVAK-RUSSIAN PARALLELS AND DIFFERENCES IN THE EXPRESSION OF SPATIAL RELATIONS II)

Abstract: In the comparative description of the Slovak language with the Russian language, it is necessary to highlight the correspondence and differences of the ways of expressing the spatial meanings in order to help the student with the identification of interference moments and ways of managing it in communication. The aim of the second part of our paper is to compare the expressions of the starting point of the movement and the target of that movement by prepositions in Slovak and Russian to point out the interference moments and to create a basis for writing of learning materials focused on their removal.

ZUZANA HRDLIČKOVÁ – ZLEPŠOVANIE ČITATEĽSKÝCH ZRUČNOSTÍ PROSTREDNÍCTVOM ON-LINE NOVÍN A ČASOPISOV (IMPROVING READING SKILLS USING ON-LINE NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES)

Abstract: One of the basic skills Business English students need to develop is understanding the news. Reading business texts enables the learner to improve reading skills and to learn essential vocabulary. Additionally, it allows him/her to keep up with national or international economic developments. The paper is part of the Project KEGA carried out at the Faculty of Applied Languages of the University of Economics in Bratislava. It aims to demonstrate challenging, individual work of an experimental group of students of the Faculty of National Economy using LMS Moodle over one semester. Via a quantitative analysis a corpus of business texts from English-language newspapers and magazines will be built. A qualitative analysis will reveal the readers’ preference in chosen topics.

Abstract: This article deals with the use of placement testing in teaching foreign languages in tertiary education, primarily at universities. It describes the most frequently used types of tests and their specifics. The aim of this paper is to show, how electronic placement tests have been developed at the University of Economics in Prague in relation to the courses of German language currently offered.

HENRIETA KOŽARÍKOVÁ, VIKTÓRIA VRÁŽELOVÁ - APLIKÁCIA INOVATÍVNEJ METÓDY PRI VÝUČBE OBCHODNEJ ANGLIČTINY (INNOVATIVE METHOD APPLICATION IN TEACHING BUSINESS ENGLISH)

Abstract: Language teachers are one group of educators exploring the attractiveness of the new teaching-learning approach. The paper deals with essence of flipped classroom method.  Authors focus on differences between traditional and new educational approach stressing the pros and cons in English language teaching. The emphasis is put on the implementation of flipped classrooms in teaching business English at university as well as on data analyses gained from a questionnaire which was conducted to find out students’ perception and preferences. The findings indicate that an impact on student experience is significantly positive.
