LÍVIA ADAMCOVÁ – PROSODIC ERRORS AS POSSIBLE MISSUNDERSTANDINGS IN COMMUNICATION

Abstract: One of the basic skills of foreign language students is phonetic-phonological skill, which besides the correct pronunciation also covers the prosodic area, i.e. intonation and accent. In the process of communication, larger units than sounds play an important role and are handled within sentences, dialogues and spoken texts of various kinds. The scientific paper examines the level of German language at Slovak universities – especially their prosodic phonological skills, and discusses the results of theory and practice in this field in a contrasting perspective.

Keywords: foreign language learning, phonetics and phonology, prosody, communication and spoken language.

ZUZANA HRDLIČKOVÁ – ACQUIRING THE KNOWLEDGE AND IMPORTANT VOCABULARY IN THE AREA OF MANAGEMENT IN A BUSINESS ENLGLISH COURSE

Abstract: Setting up one’s own business is a great dream of the younger generation. Every year, new businesses are started, but many small businesses also fail. The most quoted reason for business failure is managerial ineptitude. Needless to say, education and experience are fundamental. Interest in owning a business grows and graduates who launch start-ups do need help. Universities in Finland and Denmark show their increasing awareness of public interest by offering courses in business English and entrepreneurship where the knowledge about small business management, the management of human resources and leadership in management can be acquired. The paper is part of the Project KEGA – ‘Idioms in Business Communication’. It looks at what knowledge Slovak undergraduates should demonstrate regarding small business management. In addition, it suggests how this knowledge can be extended and business vocabulary improved.

Keywords: management, leadership, administration, organization, text, vocabulary.

EVA KAŠČÁKOVÁ - REEVALUATING THE AIMS IN ESP COURSES

Abstract: In order to prepare students for life and work shaped by the fourth industrial revolution, today’s education should develop their 21st century skills. This umbrella term includes skills, abilities and learning dispositions one has to have in order to succeed in the ever-changing digital society. Since language is present in a certain form as the common denominator in most of the 21st century skills, there is indeed a reason for including the development of the skills in the courses of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The paper suggests the implicit need to question not only what we teach but also what we test. The washback effect that high-stakes tests have on both instruction and learning is inevitable. Therefore, backward planning should be employed in the ESP course design in order to foster the positive washback and mitigate the negative one.

Keywords: 21st century skills, washback, backward planning, ESP.
