SILVIA ADAMCOVÁ – ÜBERLEGUNGEN ZU DEN SPRACHLICHEN ZEICHEN IM DEUTSCHEN (NOTES ON THE LANGUAGE SIGNS IN GERMAN)

Abstract: Semiotics is one of the oldest linguistic disciplines and still plays an important role in communication. Not only because it has a close relation to philosophy, but because we are able to express our opinions and ideas through language signs. They function as a so-called mental lexicon in our brain, while automated phrases and sentence constructions also form the basis of a newer discipline – cognitive linguistics. The paper focuses on the characterization of function and classification of language features in communicative situations, focusing on concepts and features typical of German language.

Keywords: semiotics, language sign, conventions, form and meaning, system of German language signs.

MICHAELA ČIEFOVÁ – SÚVSŤAŽNOSŤ MEDZI KULTÚRNOU DIPLOMACIOU A ZAHRANIČNÝM OBCHODOM – PRÍPAD SLOVENSKA (CULTURAL DIPLOMACY AND FOREIGN TRADE CORELLATION – THE CASE OF SLOVAKIA)

Abstract: In the present contribution we investigate the relationship between Slovak cultural diplomacy and bilateral economic relations with the countries, in which a Slovak institute has been established. We attempt to answer the question whether the locations of Slovak cultural institutes correspond with the most important trade partners of Slovakia. Moreover, we examine whether the interest in spreading language and culture is reciprocal, i.e. whether the countries with a Slovak institute have similar cultural establishments in Slovakia, while not considering embassies and consulates.

Keywords: cultural diplomacy, cultural institutes, foreign trade, Slovakia, intercultural competence.

SILVIA VERTANOVÁ – ELEMENTOS AFRICANOS EN ESPAŇOL DE CUBA (AFRICAN ELEMENTS IN THE SPANISH SPOKEN IN CUBA)

Abstract: The study includes a selection of lexemes and phrases which form an integral part of the Cuban regiolect and which contain traits of sub-Saharan African languages. The bantu language group dominates among them and it has been the oldest language consignee imported to Cuba. Indeed, this fact complicates the revelation of its occurances in the Cuban lexicon. A particular area of the lexicon is represented by terms associated with the religious cult and rituals of black slaves. On top of that, it has been confirmed that over two hundred words of African origin persisted in colloquial Spanish in Cuba. Though, the presence of bantuisms is evident mainly in phraseology.

Keywords: adstrate, bantuism, colloquial registry, idiomatics.

MARTINA ŠIPOŠOVÁ – THE INFLUENCE OF EFL TEACHER COGNITION ON GRAMMAR TEACHING IN SLOVAK LOWER SECONDARY EDUCATION (VPLYV PEDAGOGICKÉHO MYSLENIA UČITEĽA ANGLIČTINY NA VÝUČBU GRAMATIKY V NIŽŠOM SEKUNDÁRNOM VZDELÁVANÍ NA SLOVENSKU)

Abstract: This research study features interpretative research carried out among five EFL teachers in the context of grammar teaching in Slovak lower secondary education. The study is based on qualitative methodology (Grounded theory), utilising in-depth interviews and unstructured observation as the main research tools in accordance with the methodological triangulation. The findings revealed that teachers’ classroom practices are significantly influenced by teachers’ beliefs and attitudes about grammar teaching. These practices are congruent with teachers’ cognitions (mainly beliefs and attitudes). The research subjects perceive grammar as an important part of foreign language proficiency. However, they realize it cannot take the crucial role in developing overall communicative competence.

Keywords: language teacher cognition, English as a foreign language (EFL), English grammar teaching, Grounded theory, in-depth interview, a paradigm model.
